COVID-19 Protectors

John Hodge

I am a street photographer and during the height of the lockdown, I came across this scene while peddling a bicycle in rural South Carolina. At that time, our leaders were denying the seriousness of the virus, acquaintances were claiming that it was a political ploy to crash the economy and the election, and the World Heath Organization declared the virus outbreak to be a pandemic. When I look at our "COVID-19 Protectors," I wonder if the creator saw the pandemic as a fantasyland or hoax where our fate depended on the benevolence of blow up characters, cartoon heroes, Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and friends. When I looked at the scene, I saw that these heroes were just as competent as those leaders who politicized science, good medical practice, and common sense. What do you see?
